This belief was not in anyway supported by the Bible. The resistance to accepting the truth arose from the "educated scientists" of the day, not the theologians.

You can bet that the recipients of the numerous Phd's that were awarded based on Dissertations regarding Piltdown Man were very resistant to facing the truth. How hard it is to admit that we are wrong.

Evolution can reliably explain the variations among a species. Micro evolution is readily observable in our physical world.

As a mechanism to explain all of life (macro evolution), it is nothing but a metaphysical assumption with no credbile evidence to back it up.

The problem is that we use the solid evidence of the first to assume the second.
