The bottom will be in sight when small investors start announcing that they are selling short because the market has nowhere to go but down. The mood will be like that which prevails among many former Lucent holders about that stock: that it's a rotten business and they will never get into it again. (That might mean that the time is not far away to start cautiously accumulating some Lucent as part of a diversified portfolio still heavy in cash.) But caution is the watchword, since some companies, even some very large ones, may disappear altogether.

You are correct: right now there's a lot of bravado because many people are still sitting on very large gains accumulated over the past 3-10 years and cannot imagine their disappearance.
