I haven't followed the company for quite some time, so the best I can do is post a few comments from the November Chase H&Q analyst report:

Optical Components Ramping Better than Expected

As part of its ongoing strategic focus to develop optical components for the rapidly growing fiber optic segment of the telecommunications industry, GSLI recently announced the formation of its new Optics Business Unit to focus on its aggressive capacity build-up, development and sale of these components. In a recent announcement, the company noted 4Q sales of precision optics are expected to be at a $28M annualized run rate (or $7M per quarter) with 60% attributable to telecom (DWDM) optics, better than our previous expectations of $5M per quarter. Longer-term optics revenue growth is also expected to be greater than 10% of consolidated revenues (FY01), again better than our previous expectations of 8-10%. Additionally, GSLI anticipates that 75% of optics revenues in FY01 will be telecommunications related (Specifically DWDM). We believe this division may rapidly develop into a significant optical subcomponent supplier based on its design and manufacturing expertise, continuing demand for DWDM optical components, and its increasingly close involvement with its customers. We also believe that GSLI is likely to acquire more optics companies in the future, in-line with its strategic plans to aggressively grow this business. The company has already amassed a significant group of influential customers (currently three large entities) that includes important leaders in this industry, and represent an early endorsement of its technology.

The report also notes that optical sales grew from $1.8M in Q1, to $2.6M in Q2, to $3.5M in Q3, and that order intake was strong.

The company has many other products, so optics can't be your only consideration.

Perhaps others will jump in and add to the discussion.
