Moderate asceticism is integral to the monastic tradition of the West. It is typical of spiritual aspirants to think that absorption in physical satisfactions will inhibit spiritual developments, and therefore to "mortify the flesh". In Christianity, there was an inherent limitation, however, for fear of slandering creation, and, thus, the Creator, as the Manicheans had. Thus, the Benedictine rule, which formed the model for monastic life, ensured that asceticism would not become morbid or self- destructive. Similarly, the Buddha encouraged moderation in the pursuit of spiritual purity, in contrast to some of the practices he had encountered as a seeker......
