Dell

Hi Eric.

Regarding Dell's comment "Our goal is to commoditize the low-end to midrange portion of this market", my thoughts are that they have to say that, because that's all they know how to do. It's the "use the ability to screw generic boxes together cheaper than your competitors" philosophy. In the PC space, where, by definition a PC is a commodity, it's served them well.

However:

As DownSouth always points out, NetApp's strength is in their high performance WAFL file system, their ability to provide this performance while using RAID, and their Snapshot/SnapMirror/SnapRestore data administration utilities.

They're offering data storage and management solutions, which happen to utilize NAS, not just NAS storage.

Big difference.

I looks like today's going to be another very, very rough day. Good luck to everyone.

Steve

seems that NTAP is putting out lots of press tidbits to combat the falling stock price. here is a little launch-party video that seems to give EMC that rude Sicilian gesture where you brush the back of your palm under your chin (what's that gesture called anyway?)... they never mention EMC, but you know who they're talking about when they talk about "companies focused on just the data center"...

this amit pandey guy (director of marketing) is pretty cool -- very well-spoken, and knows his stuff.
