Alcatel Wins EU 1.4 Bln Military Telecommunications Contract By Katrin Bennhold Paris, Nov. 30 (Bloomberg) -- The French Defense Ministry said it awarded Alcatel SA, Europe's second-biggest phone equipment maker, a 1.4 billion euro contract for a new military communications system. The ministry said the system, to be known as Syracuse 3, will involve the launching of a new satellite and the installation of necessary ground equipment by 2003. Alcatel will be in charge of the operational maintenance of the satellite for twenty years. The contract also includes the possibility of launching two other satellites of the same type, the ministry said in a faxed statement to news agencies. The contract was awarded as a result of a competition based on supplier relationships and global performance of bidders, the ministry said.
