District Attorney E. Michael McCann said his office would look into the allegations, but added that an ongoing investigation into earlier Republican charges of double voting had failed to show a single instance of fraud. McCann said his office had looked into reports of fraud by Marquette University students, but that several e-mails, letters and calls alleging student voter fraud had failed to include specific names. "Any student who double-voted, let us know anonymously ... " McCann said. The latest allegations include charges that voters were given food stamps in exchange for votes, that blatant campaigning took place inside polling places, and that felons, children and non-citizens were allowed to cast ballots. Milwaukee Election Commission officials did not immediately return telephone calls seeking comment. Republicans had initially provided McCann with a list of 22 reports of voting irregularities which GOP officials said were compiled from witnesses' accounts. The week after the election, the Marquette student newspaper reported finding 174 students who claimed to have voted two or more times. One Marquette student told ABC News he voted for himself four times, but he later recanted, saying he had only voted once. McCann said his office had looked into the student's claims and determined the student had only voted once. After a close race, an unofficial state tally showed Bush lost to Vice President Al Gore in Wisconsin by more than 5,000 votes. AP-ES-11-28-00 2335EST ap.tbo.com
