DEMOCRATS GET EARFUL
Meanwhile, Democratic lawmakers are being inundated with phone calls.
“The sentiment in my district is 99 to 1 that Gore should pack it in, or at least it’s 99 to 1 of the ones who have called,” said Rep. Charles W. Stenholm (D-Tex.), who has been the recipient of what he described as “some orchestrated calls” in which callers are reading from a script. A conservative “Blue Dog” Democrat who would seem a natural defector, Stenholm said he has urged callers to let the legal process in Florida move forward.
House Democrats such as Minority Leader Richard A. Gephardt (Mo.) said many members targeted for such phone calls discounted them as a GOP ruse. “They see it as contrived and organized by the conservative movement,” Gephardt said this week.
“They can call me even if it is from a script,” said Sen. John Breaux (D-La.). “But [Gore] also has the right to challenge the election. I say do what the law allows. I don’t take a poll to determine what I should do.”
But Clifford May, a spokesman for the Republican National Committee, pointed to recent polls showing that a majority of Americans think Gore should concede as evidence that the campaign is having an impact.
“More and more people are coming to the conclusion it’s time for Al Gore to give up this effort to overturn an election through the courts,” he said.
