Cramer seems to read my mind and mentions the Capt. Kirks and Ensign Geoffreys of the world in one of his columns today: Who else took it down? Amateurs who thought that stocks can do nothing but go up -- and they got greedy. Many of these folks disappeared in April and May, but the ones who hung on seemed to have doubled down over the summer to make it back. They are the ones who are being cashiered right now in record numbers. They are the ones that Alan Greenspan has gunned for so successfully. And when they are gone in enough numbers that margin debt declines to where it was in 1998, Greenspan will stop talking the tough talk. We aren't there yet. Maybe after today, but I doubt it. Too many billions in debt out there. Borrowed by folks who don't have the money to liquidate and are just hoping that Covad (COVD:Nasdaq - news - boards) goes back to 20 and Teligent (TGNT:Nasdaq - news - boards) to 15 and NorthPoint (NPNT:Nasdaq - news - boards) to 10.
