horsegirl48,

>>"Whats the difference in today, Can you explain please the differences you see."<<

Unions are not near as strong, nor anywhere as large today.

The internet/communications revolution has allowed companies to compete globally unlike ever before helping to keep a lid on raising prices.

Oil is not as important today, thus less effect on inflation than in the past.

The "New Economy" that is currently being pummeled into dust in the stock market has provided vast improvements to corporate operations across the board. Expanded markets, inventory control, labor usage control, vendor competition & cost control, improved logistics for raw materials & finished goods, dramatic improvements in the efficient utilization of storage/wharehousing, improved & highly efficient production facilities, dramatic improvements in worker & corporate productivity, etc., etc., etc......

This has allowed corporations to expand profits via lower/modestly increased per unit costs, while they broaden their markets they sell into.

Oh & one other big difference between then & now. We had more gov't interference in the late 60's, early 70's along with huge military spending & soaring debt. Today the gov't is less intrusive & budget surpluses.

And don't forget the fall of communism & the opening of numerous markets worldwide (china, etc) that were not participating/enhancing the (free) world economy in the 70's.

BWDIK?
