Donald, >To me, the correlation of btb and semi-equip prices between 1999 and 2000 is just not there<

Maybe we need two variables.

The following table is the comparison between First Call
earnings estimates of last week compared to this week. Not
much movement between the 2 weeks. Both this year and next
year estimates are down, but only by 0.25 and 0.50 percent
respectively.

There is one caveat - A new estimate for next year of 2.40
was given for PRIA, but I did not include it in the table in
order to make an "apples to apples" comparison between the
2 weeks.

Donald - welcome back. Perhaps you could use your influence to force the SEMs to move the other way...for a change of pace :)

Your finding of a lack of correlation between the BtB and SEM stock prices this year should not be all that surprising. If the sector operated in a vacuum (whatever that might mean), I would assume the correlation - and many others - would be much stronger. The fact that there's now the widespread perception of a significant slowdown is driving the longevity of this sector's downturn. We also have a slight problem with the presidency, a thus-far-unchanged anti-inflation policy of the Fed, and the unnervingly unchanged perception that the SEM sector remains wholly reliant on PC sales as the indirect basis for its revenues.

And of course I can't resist this hint of changing perceptions for my 'despised' puppy Message 14910788

[Demosthenes - if you have a Schwab account/Signature services, First Call data is available through the website. If you have a specific request, I could try to find it for you]
