When I was but a young boy, my father explained I could not grow up to be a lawyer, he & my mother were married - & to each other. I would need to work for a living instead.

I used to think that in general, lawyers were pretty smart and most judges too. The truth though, is that there are a lot more stupid and lazy lawyers than most people imaging.

Recently, I was involved in a case where one of my co-plantifs (with no college education or legal experience) researched a legal position and found case law that won us a significant victory in court. This was after a team of $250/hour lawyers told us the particular law didn't apply to our case.
