But make no mistake about it, right now Sony has a huge advantage in terms of software support and sheer mindshare. Ask any Joe Schmoe on the street, and he's more likely to have heard about PSX2 than XBox.

An awful lot of people are aware of XBox today considering that it's a year away from launch and there's been no advertising.

Besides, what most people know about PS2 is the fact that they can't have one :).

But DirectX games--the majority already written for the PC--are portable to the X-box.

"Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh".....he says. Come to think of it, now that you brought this up...MAYBE THAT IS WHY IT IS CALLED THE "X-BOX", as in DIRECT-X.

"Poof" there is already a shitload of software!

Microsoft plans to spend about $0.5 Billion on marketing X-Box, so Joe Schmoe will definitely know about it at launch time. As far as developers go, EA is the only major firm not publicly pronouncing support. xbox.com

I view Sony's current inability to manufacture to target as a major vulnerability of PS2. I think they would need 20 million PS2's in consumer's hand by next Fall to keep from getting steam-rolled by X-Box and they will probably be only half way there.
