ACRU and ACLU,

It's so great when two organizations can have such similar acronyms, very user friendly. The ACRU is a new organization to me; I felt a little disappointed in myself for having missed them. But they were only established in 1998, so I don't feel too bad.

Found their Web site and even found there an argument for their selection of the name. An odd argument I thought. But then I've always found it annoying when the Legislature proposes two very different legislation with the same name. I was quite pleased to see the Washington Times article quoting the ACRU as being non-partisan. It was pretty neat that for only $10,000 you can become an Executive Member; Executive Committee Members play a direct role in setting and implementing our agenda .... A little deja vu of the Federalist Party Slogan.

There was one passage at the ACRU site that had me a little confused ...

The ACLU has publicly criticized President Clinton when he took positions it thought were too liberal. The group slammed Mr. Clinton for supporting teen curfews and for signing the Defense of Marriage Act in 1996 that denies recognition of same-sex "marriages," a move which enraged homosexual activists.

I never would have guessed that those two particular positions would have been labeled as "too liberal". That's one of those paragraphs that when you get to the end ... Did I read that right? Then you read it again and you did!

I don't directly follow ACLU activities and haven't even seen very much on them over the last several years. I assume that they are as active but not on anything the press would consider a really good story. The last action of the ACLU that I can specifically recall is the case in Chicago where a state of emergency [or something akin to that] was declared in a Chicago housing project; the declaration allowed Chicago police to conduct warrantless searches. ... That was a long time ago.

If I may ask, what is your legal speciality?

Best Regards,
