Actually, I didn't follow that Pope yarn.... I think the whole case's just a hoax to cajole the Russians, I mean, to flatter their pride.

Frankly, who'd believe that Americans need to spy on Russia as regards its military gear?? US technology is light-years ahead of Russia's in any field whatsoever. So, the Russians have achieved a breakthrough in torpedo technology? Their so-called "Squall" supertorpedo, eh? But torpedoes are all about hydrodynamics, that is, it boils down to huge computations.... That is to say, it comes down to POWERFUL COMPUTERS!! Now, tell me, who's got the most powerful computers around?? You've guessed it: Uncle Sam. Actually, even the Russian military use US parallel transputers to handle their engineering heavy stuff.

As regards the Kursk wrecking, I told you: we're dealing here with a superpower's (nuclear) deterrence CREDIBILITY. It is my belief that there was a "rotten branch" in the Kursk's crew --I mean a spy-- and, as Putin got aware of it, instead of only pruning the rotten branch away, he just screwed up the whole caboodle....

It's one thing to "support" a coupla moles inside your rank and file, quite another to spot one in your elite submariners. It even makes me wonder whether the FSB was involved in the scheme.... If the Kursk, somehow, turned out to be corrupted then the FSB might have been given the job of pulling the plug on it --and making it to look like an accident....

Gus.
