Micron Electronics Warns of Dismal Holiday PC Sales

PALO ALTO (Reuters) - Direct personal computer maker Micron Electronics Inc. (NasdaqNM:MUEI - news) joined its larger rival Gateway Inc. (NYSE:GTW - news) on Thursday by warning that sales and earnings will fall below forecasts, blaming flagging holiday PC sales and declining memory chip prices.

The Napa, Idaho-based company said that for fiscal first quarter ending Nov. 30, it will have sales of $385 million to $400 million, and that earnings per share will range from 1 cent to 4 cents when results are announced Dec. 20.

The per-share estimate from Micron Electronics is far below the First Call/Thomson Financial consensus analyst forecast of 11 cents.

In addition to the slow holiday PC sales, Micron Electronics said that falling prices in dynamic random-access memory chips, or DRAMs, were largely to blame for the earnings shortfall.

Micron Electronics shares $1-1/16, or 17 percent, to $5-5/16 on the Nasdaq. The shares are at a year-low and well off their hear high of $20-11/16. The company issued the earnings warning after the close of regular U.S. trading.
