snideness only partly justified. Apparently SI is experiencing a much greater slowdown than other message board venues, so the problem is considered to be partly site-related and not just market-related. That's apparently why they're setting up those "open to the public" threads in addition to the regular ones--to try and jack up the post volume...

Yeah and I've noticed that craps tables are a lot noisier when everyone is winning. :-)

Don't worry. Things wil get noisy around here real soon.

So what happens when SI launches those public boards? Is the whole system going to drown in overpopulation like Usenet did?

I'm curious how they will handle these "premium" boards. I assume SI has to keep them around because so many of us have those lifetime memberships. This system might become like the WELL and turn stagnant. I hope not, but I've seen it happen before.

SI reminds me of the alt groups back in the days before the Web took over: a big open market of ideas featuring every personality type imagineable. The pay-to-post model makes a useful screen.

Keep in mind that you and I may hate the yelling and screaming on those other sites, but all that noise rings in the pageviews and banner ads.

I'm a craps player myself, but it seems clear that the skill sets of good poker players are more applicable to successful investing. A fine demonstration of what good poker playing is all about is available in the current (Dec) issue of Harper's--"Fortune's Smile: Betting big at the World Series of Poker," by James McManus. Sorry, not available online.
