Thanks DownSouth,

I watched a great presentation by one of the founders yesterday from NTAP. I have a bunch of links now to look into DAFS.

The presentation is very concise and talks about the future of storage.

I had the pleasure of talking with NTAP's CEO for about 30 minutes a couple of months ago. The key take away from that discussion in my mind was that software is the secret sauce.

That's why I became interested in the software angle here.

Best,

John

DownSouth,

Do you have any informative links on DAFS/VI? Who are the other backers of DAFS/VI other then NTAP? Are there NIC and HBA vendors supporting this? You mention that DAFS/VI will be able to communicate over 802.3, FC, and Infiniband. To accomplish transport over FC, NTAP will need a vendor like Emulex or Qlogic to implement the DAFS/VI interface on their FC HBA's. Infiniband being a ways out, some vendor will need to make Host Channel Adapters and Target Channel Adapters (Pieces of the Infiniband Arch.) with a DAFS/VI interface if transport on Infiniband is desired. Vendors will initially be focused on making Infiniband Switches, Chassis, and the other important pieces of the IB fabric, so support of DAFS/VI would be a bit farther away, depending on how successful it is over 802.3 networks. All these questions may be answered once I read more on DAFS, so if you can provide me with some links, please do.
