Just for the sake of argument, could one argue with a straight face that Gateway and Micron are focused on the US and AMD could do just fine on the basis of strong sales in Asia and Europe?

Jeff,

I don't think the problem in the US is that sales are so weak. I think the real problem is that the boxmakers way over ordered when Intel was having manu. problems....and now the inventories are unusually high. I think everyone was hoping for a strong Xmas in PCs and it didn't happen...people are going after other stuff like digital cameras.

This same inventory exists in the wireless/cellphone and networking industries. CSCO's, NOK, JDSU, SCMR etc have inventories way out of line with demand...that's why AMCC, TXCC, PMCS etc are dying on the vine.

So apparently even with strong sales in Europe, they are not strong enough to work down those inventories. And what is worrisome is that GTW is warning so strongly. It makes me think the chip inventories must be very large.

I think this will save Compaq as well, and I hope the analysts are smart enough to see this. Of course Intel will be under more pressure tomorrow. And, I think that Dell will have to warn yet again.
