Hammer: My big-shot GOP lawyer friend from mid-Missouri says another reason Ashcroft lost was that he didn't work hard enough for flood relief when the Missouri and Mississippi rivers ran wild a few years back. Bond was out hustling for federal bucks but Ashcroft wasn't. I don't know the particulars, but this is what he said. This guy votes straight GOP all the time but he said he couldn't vote for Ashcroft ... and this was before Carnahan's death. Re: "One of the few statesmen of this era." Have you heard or read what Ashcroft intends to do after he leaves office?
