I just did a quickie research and Dole got it put in in 1976. McCain wanted it removed, that's why the Religious Right Republicans ate him alive.

Good for McCain. I told you it made me somewhat proud when TraderGreg compared me to him.<g>

I think it was 1980. But, and this is important only from the political aspects rather than the issue itself, if you recall, back in 1976, there was a fairly heated fight for the nomination between Reagan and Ford. I don't doubt that some of the pro-Reagan people stayed home in '76 because they viewed Ford as too liberal for a Republican. Ford is pro-choice.

So, while the issue fully blossomed in '80 with the force of the Christian Coalition, the right certainly had an impact in '76 in hurting Ford in what was a very close election.

One of my favorite sayings comes to mind whenever I think of: Carter musing about 1976 Reagan Republicans, Nixon reflecting over 1968 McCarthyites, W as related to 2000 Naderites, and (this should be good for some discussion) Fidel and those Miami Cuban exiles:

"With enemies like them, who needs friends?"
