All good questions, and certainly there are means to prevent such calamities. But let me say that the issues involved with maintaining a redundant (even a standalone, although there should never be a single-standing DNS server without a backup) domain name system (DNS) architecture are not as straightforward, nor are they as easily maintained, as other parts of Internet infrastructure at the lower layers. I've given this pr and your message to our DNS guru and I've asked him to comment. Later.
