AMDZONE confirms AMD using Isonics pure silicon, sort of
"Super Silicon" update
Reported by: Travis Gillitzer At: 12:05 PM
Source: ICQ
Shortly after Chris posted the story from TheRegister about AMD possibly using pure Silicon a friend from AMD sent me a message with some info. It confirms TheRegister's story. I don't have a link to an article, but the following qoute comes from the October 2000 issue of Solid State Technology Magazine.

"Eagle-Picher Technologies, Joplin, MO, is quadrupling its capacity for isotopic enrichment of silicon. Why? Researchers at MIT and other labs have demonstrated that the pure isotope 28Si has a thermal conductivity that is 60% greater than natural silicon at room temperature, and 40% greater at 100 C. This increase in silicon's thermal conductivity could have a profound effect on the ability of ICs to dissipate the heat that they generate."

"Isonics Corp., Golden, CO, a customer of Eagle Picher, is driving much of the development in this area. ......This brings the total number of institutions working with 28Si supplied by Isonics to 12. This number includes IC manufacturers such as Cypress and AMD, so it is not an area of purely academic interest now."

Doesn't confirm anything about what product the pure silicon is for, but the Register's Palomino conjecture could be correct.
