Mitch and Cosmicforce--Of interest to you might be the works of Joesph Campbell on mythology. He does a great deal of work on the subconscious aspects of developing myths. In addition to giving me a lot of new insights into myths and their origins, he also helped me really understand Jung.
Campbells work tends to back what Mitch has alluded to, that the individuals mind itself is the source for 'past life' experiences and so forth.

Mitch--How have you been doing? Good to see you around. If you have any news, ideas, or lies let me know. [I should have married my DDIM short. I take such vows seriously, 'until death do we part'. Since it looks like the death will be DDIM's, I regret a great deal not entering into matrimony.]

Re: many paths

I agree with you completely. I myself am schizophrenic in these matters. If I seem skeptical, it is only because you are naturally seeing the more interesting side of me rather than a bunch of "me too!" posts.

I try to hold simultaneously (or at least in a time-sharing manner) many different "outlooks", where "outlook" is defined as a coherent set of ontology/epistemology/metaphysics viewpoints. I believe this schizophrenia of outlooks helps to strengthen each individual outlook by allowing them to challenge each other. Also, I realize that an outlook can restrict or allow what you end up perceiving, so I don't want to miss out on anything my sticking with just one. (I has been shown that most people will not even see a mailbox on the corner unless they are planning to mail a letter).

But, despite the multitude of outlooks, I have only one "stance", where "stance" is defined as how you behave and react to the world around you, closely tied to morals. You do not have to follow the rules of a particular religion or believe in the Great Pumpkin to live a moral life. You can enter a state of mind where behaving morally is as natural as falling off a log. Such a state-of-mind not only makes you more tolerable to be around, it is also very pleasurable in its own right. You should treat "sins" as a symptom that you are not in the right state. Do not shun them, but treat them as a valuable message that you have strayed. Karma is immediate when your identity has expanded enough.

Excuse me now, for it is time for my crystal enema. ;-)
