Also find the whole thing fascinating, but I think that attempts to determine the precise effect/importance of the non-Election are hopeless. I think it's easy to underestimate, just as it would be silly to attribute the entire post-11/7 decline to the inability of Votamatics to read indentations. ("If the chad's suspect, you must elect," saith the Dems.) From time to time, the mkt.'s quite sensibly had to discount at least the possibility of total political-electoral train wreck - something somewhat worse than a weak/centrist President. At the same time, the very closeness of the election and the refusal of either side to give an inch, thus taking a big gray muddle and turning it into a set of vicious black and whites, can't be separated from the same larger socio-economic context, this whole increasingly Grinchy Xmas season we're having, that is mirrored, reinforced, and potentially advanced by a stalling or falling stock market. The average bullish citizen is left to hope that the great conversion comes in time, just as in the story.
