Noisy bus puts brakes on Micron PC

By John G. Spooner, ZDNet News

Electrostatic noise causes MicronPC.com to redesign the motherboard on new high-end PCs,
delaying shipping times by up to six weeks.

MicronPC.com has pushed out the expected ship date of one of its two new Millennia Max Xp PC
models because of a noisy motherboard problem.

The PC is based on Advanced Micro Devices Inc.'s (NYSE:AMD - news) new 760 chip set, which offers
either a 200MHz or a 266MHz front side bus. (The bus provides a data pipeline between the processor and
memory subsystem.)

MicronPC.com is currently the only PC maker shipping the 760 chip set in North
America.

When the PC maker began production of the higher-end of the two PCs -- the Max
Xp with the 266MHz front side bus -- it discovered more electrostatic discharge
noise emanating from the bus than was anticipated, said company spokesman Paul
Desmond.

That noise, essentially electrical interference, could potentially affect the PC's RAM
or hard drive.

Six-week delay

As a result MicronPC.com halted production, which has delayed shipping lead
times by roughly six weeks -- to approximately 98 days from about 56 days.

The company has since redesigned the motherboard, working with AMD and motherboard maker Gigabyte
Technology Co., Ltd. The redesign added hardware filters to reduce or eliminate the noise.

MicronPC.com is now qualifying the new motherboard and expects to begin shipping as soon as Jan. 20. Its
"worst-case scenario" ship date is now Feb. 12, Desmond said.

The PC features a 1.2GHz Athlon chip, 266MHz bus and 266MHz Double Data Rate Synchronous Dynamic
RAM (PC 2100 memory). Its price starts at about $2,645.

Micron is currently shipping the other Xp model -- configured with a 1.2GHz Athlon chip and 200MHz bus --
priced starting at about $1,959. Lead times on that PC are about five days, Desmond said.

While Micron is the first PC maker to ship the 760 chip set, other PC makers are expected to announce
systems with the chip set and memory technology in the first half of next year.
