From one who protested back then against the war, Gore's bs about going because he didnt want another young man from carthage to go in his place does not ring true. Think of how many lives he could have saved if he had thought less of his political future and joined others in the peace movement. The son of a senator might have had an impact. Instead he made a career move into journalism. NOONE who lived in that terrible time has clean hands when it comes to military service, myself included. We acted with a combination of idealism, fear of death, fear of becoming a killer, etc. How to make a decision back then was not easy whether one was following orders in the military or teaching in impoverished areas as I did.
I dont dwell on it much anymore but i resent folks like gore who declare praise themselves on a decision that is not all that clear.
