rather it'll mean the end of the punch-card system and, thus, fairer elections in the future.

Let's hope so.
This election certainly brought problems and errors of the system to the surface.

There were a couple of professors on the tube earlier who would strongly disagree with your assertion that he statistically won Florida. This was on CNN (long noted for their "fairness", lol), and is was determined by these statisticians that if EVERYTHING went Gore's way, his best chance in Florida would be 1 in 3.
