Evaluating your base of support is not a generalization, regardless of how you blather. If you are proud to associate with the Clinton's, Jackson's, Gore's etc, then go for it dude.

I'm well aware of social problems and am trying to convince myself that I can make a small difference.

May I suggest that instead of using your fabulosly trained mind to theorize and think about it, you get out of the library and do something.
