Can you say, "Delusions of grandeur?"

Several friends mentioned that Mr.
Gore's father, who died in 1998,
would never have encouraged his
son to end his challenge. In fact,
when the Mr. Gore first ran for
president in 1988, his family saw
the fact that he won seven states
on Super Tuesday as proof that he
was on his way to the Oval Office
Ñ while most of his advisers
thought that he had needed to win
at least eight or nine states to
stay in the race.

The campaign celebrated that
night, at Nashville's Opryland
Hotel. "Al gave a real rousing set
of remarks and his dad was on the
edge of the stage and I was going
to help him down," remembered
Arlie Schardt, Mr. Gore's campaign
chairman that year. "But instead
of climbing down, he put his arms
way up in the air in a huge V and
yelled, "Arlie, that boy is going
to be president.' That was the
mood that night."

Mike Kopp, who worked for Mr. Gore
for years in Congress as well as
on that campaign, said that then,
as now, the Gore family saw
victory where others saw defeat.

"The staff saw the writing on the
wall, but the family was in it to
the bitter end," Mr. Kopp said.
"The family is very competitive
and they, regardless of what might
be staring them in the face, they
don't give up. This is his family
name, his father's dream and his
own future, so they're not willing
to give up."

Mr. Kopp said that, over the
years, Mr. Gore's unwillingness to
listen to different points of view
or to brook even the
best-intentioned criticism from
old friends had narrowed his
circle considerably.

WRONG AGAIN. You simply don't let the facts get in your way do you? He was interviewed by the press. It is real. They tried to steal the election behind closed doors, and some good, concerned citizens refused to allow that to happen.
