The reason I might not splurge on a jazzier chip is that this would be an interim machine while I scheme on a really powerful dual processor W2k machine that would get me absolute maximum performance for handling trading software (RT3 etc) and downloading of massive amounts of data at high speed in real time. This has become an increasing challenge for modems, isps and machines and now that quotes are going decimal, it appears to me the quote data stream is going to be massively more complex and bulky to download and process.

You might want to talk to these folks about a trading machine. I have had no experience with them.

Dell came out with a dual processor system for traders back in May. In looking at the Dell site you need to look at the business computers instead of the home computers.

I have noticed that RealTick3 servers lag behind. Not much your computer, modem or isp can do about that. In the recent past, I would run datek streamer just so I could tell how far behind my main quote system was running.

On another topic...I was surprised how fast my hard drive fragments because of running streaming quotes. I haven't looked into it yet, but if you were to partition a part of your hard drive for the real tick program there might be a benefit. There are a couple of partition pros on this thread that would have some helpful ideas.

I'm thinking about using flat panel monitors as they should be easier on my eyes and possibly faster to refresh. Plus, I am running out of desk space and my current monitors do heat up the room.<G>
