My total portfolio value was 12K, account value was 2K and margin was 10K. I was told I must sell 3 times of stock which around 14K, I don't know how they came up with the number.

Rick, what was in your account? Was it all long stock, short stock, options, etc? Can you tell me specifically what the positions were, with long and short stock in dollars and the full details of the options positions?

The "3 times selling" rule of thumb applies to long stock with a 30% requirement. If you can give me the details of your account, we'll determine the requirements step by step.
