Greg, I have posted hundreds of scriptual references (direct quotes) on this thread, any one of which was sufficient to convince me, that the caricature portrayed in the various Christian writings that the church Authorities decided to keep (as their picture of God), was entirely misconceived and faulty. Every one of the immense contradictions, absurdities, and inanities in the bible, is sufficient (in my mind) to constitute a fatal flaw to any claim of accuracy, or of deity. I cannot fathom how any person can read the scriptures and not be disgusted by their content, and not be convinced that they derive from the most primitive and uncivilized of superstitious savages. This is true even by definition. They were written in a time of magic and superstition--long before individual human rights had entered the conceptual framework of human thought, and long before we had discovered the laws that imposed a rational structure on both the outer and inner world. Yet, I cannot deny the fact that the irrationality of the biblical story does not appear to bother you, even though you appear to accept rationality as a basis for discussion and debate OUTSIDE of the scriptual text. Indeed, you often are very careful and concerned to examine a point in a rational context provided it is a point outside of scripture, or not trumped by scripture. I cannot follow this type of split mind, which ditches rationality whenever it comes up against some magical beliefs, yet wishes to use it as a hand maiden outside of this divine circus. There is scarcely a single chapter in all the biblical books that does not contain material that offends the sensibilities, and outrages the heart, of any rational and civilized person. What you not rather die than to believe in this God? Would you want this God to walk amongst us today--creating wars and ordering mass executions? Having babies killed to get back at some enemy? Forcing people to eat dung, and to carve up animals in bizarre ways so He could savour the smell of burning flesh; Wiping out whole schoolyards of children because one of them made fun of somebody's hair. Striding the globe from corner to corner, killing and torturing relentlessly; Dividing people, not on the basis of good and harmless vs. vicious and evil, but on the basis of Race? Remember, there would be no rules. If someone (generations from you, or your children), had done something that pissed God off--He would be just as likely to murder and torture your kids as anybody elses. He would order the babes and men and women ripped apart to the last breath, and the young girls to be raped and used by whichever conquering army He was leading at the time. And so called FRIENDS would be randomly murdered without reason just as were the enemies. These are terrorist values. This is not the world you want for your children. It cannot be. We are in a nuclear age; We are in an age of weapons of mass destruction--including biochemical. Would you want God running around with these weapons at hand? Would you want His followers running around, and pissed off at the enemy, with these weapons at hand. Do you think this is all a game, Greg. Do you think you can just shrug off the vast majority of the bible as if it doesn't matter. Just take what gives you a bit of comfort, and allow the rest of it to be the guidebook of those that are far less gentle in thought than you? It is not a game. Chosen People religions are by far the biggest threat to the progress--indeed, to the survival of the human race--and you know who is gonna give a damn? Your kids, and grandkids, and theirs. Do you think we have conquered war? Do you think it is ok for people to shrug their shoulders at 99.9 % of the bible because they want the dubious comfort of believing that some incompetent old man in the sky will float them around in a heaven forever, while he burns everyone else for eternity-- and supernaturally keeps them alive so that He may enjoy their suffering. Do you reallybelieve that this God, who was invented by those desert priests, is more civilized than X, or Cosmic, or E, or TP, or Steve, or any of the others that have stopped by here? Now this is the God we are discussing here. I can give you a new scripture each day until the end of time to prove what the bible says about God. But these are the words of the bible, and these words MUST be faced head-on. They must be challenged and worried and internalized. They must be tasted, weighed, measured...and they must be condemned. Now Greg, DO YOU REALLY WANT HIM TO EXIST????? DO YOU REALLY WANT HIM ANYWHERE WITHIN A TRILLION LIGHT YEARS OF THIS PLANET???? How could you even consider it?
