I thought IJ said the royalty rate was the same regardless on CDMA flavor.

If VZ and Sprint are out with 1X and 144 KBS per second late next year, that will be a big marketing advantange into the next Holiday season. By the time AWE gets its 3G in place, VZ and Sprint are likely to be offering HDR. T can perhaps overlay HDR instead of the EDGE, in which case Q gets the royalties from the HDR IP. Am I missing something?

Spinco owns its own patents to trade with the GSM cabal. QCOM gave them enough to moot out the GSM cost, and yes they will pay QCOM royalties like everyone else, but they will be on the same level playing field as the GSM ASIC manufacturers.

SpinCo will have a royalty free license from QCOM to produce CDMA(all types) ASICs. In return QCOM can claim some future patents developed by SpinCo.

ehopper...this stuff starts to spin in one's head if one isn't careful...

The basic story here is that Sprint and Verizon will be up and running full speed wireless internet access with all the bells a whistles (with Sprint probably being first) LONG before AT&T and their hair ball NTT friends even get off the ground with their system. CDMA 2000 will be far superior and first to market HERE in the U.S. I suspect AWE and AT&T will be in serious trouble by then...no matter what kind of marketing they do.

In Asia it is slightly different because the GSM crowd has a better foothold. But again, the market will see the distinctions clearly as Korea and China roll out their CDMA services before the cabal.

We are invested in QCOM because we believe they can pull this off due to the superiority of the product. I don't see this AT&T thing challenging that at all. In fact I see AT&T digging their grave much faster because of it.
