TORONTO, Dec. 1 /CNW/ - For the past year the Royal Canadian Mounted
Police, Toronto West Customs & Excise Section, in partnership with Canada
Customs have been investigating the alleged criminal activities of a group
involved in the smuggling of gold jewellery from South Asia and the United
States into Canada. It is alleged that couriers were recruited by members of
this group to smuggle the gold into Canada.
Over the past few months the RCMP and Canada Customs have made several
seizures of gold jewellery from couriers hired by this group totalling 29
kilos valued at over 1 Million dollars.
On Thursday, November 30 search warrants were executed at seven (7)
locations in Toronto and Brampton. An estimated 50 kilos of alleged smuggled
gold jewellery was seized from Thuniaram Wholesale Jewellers, Brampton and
India Jewellers, Etobicoke. The approximate value of the seized items is over
2 Million dollars.>>
