Pat Caddell address the optical scanning bit on hardball last night but everybody was so busy yelling at each other and he doesn't have the smoothest delivery, I couldn't quite make out his yarn...heard a neat phrase: "AT the beginning of the year we had y2k...now at the end of the year we have y2presidents!!!

yes, figures don't lie but liars figure.
The undervote for other offices would not be statistically signifcant unless compared to other years. Lots of people only vote for President, Senator, Congressman and skip the lower offices. The cross-examination is deceptive in trying to claim that a similar rate of undervote for the lower offices would tend to disprove the claims of the Gore campaign about the defects in the machine evidenced by scratch marks etc.

Yes, I'm watching. Now I see that not only does Mr. Hengartner(whom I listened to on C-span last week, I believe) say his conclusion requires more study and that Gore's lawyers left that caveat out when presenting his thoughts to the FSC, but the basis of his tentative conclusion was based on the FALSE assumption that candidates on the compared 98 ballots appeared in the questioned ballot column no's 1&2 as assumed from information provided to him from the Gore Campaign.

In fact the placement of candidates on that '88 ballot was exactly reversed from what Hengartner had based his tentative opinion.

Seems Hengartner's been blasted, through no large fault of his own...and the Gore team follow up failed to touch this issue.
