True...but maybe you can explain why server buyers aren't as good a shoppers than PC shoppers? Why to server buyers shell out all those bucks? Seems like someone would demand a server at a PC price (plus the other goodies).

How cheap should they get? They are one third to one fourth the cost on a price/performance basis vs. Sun, HP or IBM Unix. Tell those guys to get cheap! You've seen the TPC/C charts. The processor becomes a much smaller part of the overall cost in servers anyway. The bigger memory, extra drive and PCI slots, remote management and all the availability features, like most everything becoming hot-plug, run up the cost. Exceptions are the 4-ways and 8-ways. The big cache Xeons are still pricey and remain a higher percentage of the overall server cost. Of course, there are 8 of them in the 8-way so they're bound carry more cost weight.

What do you have in mind, AMD based servers?
