Where do you see the checks and balances coming from? There are no environmental checks or balances left in the system after Bush takes over.

The EPA will be voting shortly whether or not to force dredging of the upper Hudson River for PCBs dumped into the river by GE two generations ago. This is despite the fact that PCB levels have dropped 90% in the upper Hudson in the last 20 years. In the tidal portion of the river, PCB levels are low enough to allow limited consumption of non permanent river species (striped bass/shad/blueclaw crabs/herring/bluefish/etc) The Hudson River estuary is now probably the major source for juvenile striped bass for the entire mid-Atlantic region. The annual spring striped bass spawning run is estimated to be over 2 million fish. They estimate about 1.5 million pounds of PCBs are buried in the sediments of the upper river below 2 major dump sites. It is not clear that dredging will make matters any better. If a mistake is made, it could set things back at least two generations. I think the natural sedimentation processes that are occurring in the river will continue to isolate river species from the buried sediments and NO further action should be taken. The Hudson has made a remarkable come back. It is a national treasure that more and more people come to appreciate every year. Maybe we need the Republicans to put a leash on the EPA before they really screw things up. Sometimes, checks and balances are needed both ways.

The polar ice caps are melting. The Russian whaling fleet is reassembling. Where is environmental leadership going to come from?

and who is not voting and driving a SUV?
