To be honest, I didn't know how one even began to look into such a thing, but I have been looking into it, and I thought the thread might be interested in my progress through the system. I once looked up the Nevada rules (or it might have been Michigan), and in whichever state it was an applicant had to have kept an "unofficial ballot" for a few hundred fights, which would then be reviewed by the Boxing Commission. I live in Rhode Island, which isn't exactly a boxing Mecca, but we do have a small professional scene (anybody remember Vinnie Pazienza.....no jokes please). You should also know that I am totally unconnected to the boxing world, or to local politics. Anyway, under R.I. statute, professional boxing is regulated by the R.I. Department of Business Regulation ("DBR"). I looked up the applicable DBR regulations, and found that the licensure of boxers, judges and refs was under control of the "Division of Racing and Athletics." The regulations clearly spoke of an "application form," but did not give any indication as to the criteria to be met. So, I called the DBR Division of Racing and Athletics, and got an answering machine on which I left my name and number. AFter two days of no return call, I finally got through to a clerk and requested an application. She told me I would have to write an "introductory letter" to the Associate Director to begin the "process." "Well, what is the process?" I asked. "I have no idea." The clerk responded. So, this morning I am faxing off a letter to this guy introducing myself and asking for an application, or for any information. I have also asked for a list of active licensed judges in the state. I'll keep the thread informed on my progress, or lack thereof. Quahog
