The Australian was fairly supportive of Gore during the campaign and in matters Australian is by no means a conservative paper; would you agree? If you want Aussie right wing go to the New Australian and several others. And in China ole' Ruperts operations there are playing up to the Chicoms in a big way. There is a big scandal about a book written by Chris Patten, the last British governor general of Hong Kong, and the manuscript being somewhat critical of the Chicoms; it was written under contract with S&S, Murdochs New York publisher, and then supressed, apparentaly due to pressure from Bejing. I don't doubt for a minute that Murdoch and his top lieutenants are completely cynical about US politics; they probably don't really give a whit who is in power here. But apparently they made the decision that it would be benificial to their intrests to be supportive of the right wing; and they do support the right here, nobody could doubt that. And to me that is the real danger, here are these foreign media manipulators, with their own alien agenda attempting to influence American opinion, and toward whatever unknown end. Most nations have very strong laws governing alien ownership of the mass media; we should have such laws here too (either that or just completely open the borders!). I realize Murdoch himself supposedly carries a US passport (and how many others?) but that is not the point. His operation is very clever; In many US cities the local Fox TV station shares personel with the Clear Channel radio broadcast there; the CCU broadcast is "hard right" and the TV broadcast is by nature "toned down" but in Atlanta (and I have heard this in other places) the Fox traffic helicopter guy comes on the CCU broadcast and is as political as the radio host at the time. In Atlanta the stinkers' name is Keith Calland and just the other day I heard him say on the radio broadcast " democrats just suck, they ALL suck". Then he goes back on TV with his smileyface and acts as apolitical as a stone. Of course the local right wingers see him on TV and think "he's our guy!". Now what if some other "mainstream" media outfit did things like this. Wasn't it Peter Jennings who had to apoligise for a frown or facial twitch? WSR
