It is just a sloppy electrical engineering. Eventually
they started to realize that when a chip consumes
30A and has little operational margins on Vcc,
every milli-Ohm of package and board traces count.
FYI, Intel's design guidance for Vcc power supply
calls for _local_ feedback for buck converter.
AMD engineers were more educated and use four-wire
power connection to K7: high current Vcc and ground
planes, and two dedicated low-current feedback wires,
both from Vcc and ground points on the chip. In this
way the power supply delivers a voltage that is
automatically compensated for parasitic power
plane resistance, and the Vcc is always accurate
no matter what.
I am surprised that Intel engineers are not
familiar with basics of power supply applications.
