You say it because you probably haven't lived through a bear market. Correction. You ARE going through one right now, but you wouldn't know it until much later.

Over the next 10 years, MSFT will underperform the total stock market index (or the S&P 500, take your pick), and so will INTC, CSCO and other stocks that seem to be in everybody's portfolio these days.

The lesson is simple -- the higher you pay, the lower your return. The lower you pay, the higher your return. I won't be surprised at all if a "lowly" stock like AWK beats all of the aforementioned tech darlings over the next 10 years. As Buffett said, "You pay a high price for a cheery consensus".
