When it was suggested that votes be recounted in all the Florida counties, the Republicans balked. I think the reason they refused was the combined belief that they might well lose the recount and that they could win the state by avoiding it. Phrases like "endless recounts" and accusing the Democrats of trying to "steal" the election through a vote recount, serve only to smokescreen their attempt to grab the election by pre-empting a recount. The great problem Bush and his cronies are having in Florida is the need to maintain the appearance of a fair election result without risking it through a legitimate recounting of ballots. The combination of a flawed voting machine system, which simply doesn't count many ballots, and a close election result, makes the request for a manual recount natural and reasonable. As many have pointed out, there have been enough anomalies in the Florida election that it is extremely unlikely that there will be a general consensus that a fair result has been obtained. I think that would be the case even if extraordinary steps were taken to assure a full and accurate vote count. Without those steps being taken, the arguments that the election results have been manipulated to deliver the state and the election to Gov. Bush are both credible and persuasive. I'm not a big fan of Al Gore, but I would like to see a fair election result. If it doesn't turn out that way and a major voter backlash occurs, I think it will be well-deserved.
