Actually the mess will be over in two weeks. Brace yourself for some possibly earth-moving court opinions. The absentee ballot case is a mess for the Republicans, and might very well cost Bush the election. The hand counts, if extended state wide, will still not help Bush, because the scanning system used more widely in Republican counties is not so error prone, and rejects improperly cast ballots as they are being submitted so that they can be corrected. In other words, a recount has to help Gore more than Bush even if done statewide. Bush's decision to more and more stridently assert that he is the President-elect is not wise, IMO.
