Yeah. And punch cards. Remember dropping the deck, screaming, and then working for HOURS to get the cards back in the right order?

Remember batch processing? Put your deck in the stack, go do something else for several hours, come back and get your print-out.

Remember paper tape? And photoreaders? Yuck!

How about:
Read your source tape in;
read the compiler in;
computer compiles the source and punches an object tape; read the object tape in;
read the linker tape in;
computer links the program and punches an executable tape; read the executable tape in and run it.

This was an HP2100 running RTE-II. Mid-1970's. Or was that 1070's?

I don't miss any of it!
