Genelabs and Nanogen both have funding from the military in this area. Don't recall either of the programs as involving that much money at this stage, though. (But it's been a while since I last looked).

The military would like a sensor that quickly detects nasty bugs. Cynically I assume they would be used in the same way the nerve-gas detectors were during the Gulf war - if it goes off again, turn it off because it's giving yet another false alarm, and nobody really wants to climb into one of those sealed suits for an extended period anyhow.

From a political perspective, funding for this area will only grow. Fortunately, I would think that any goodies they do discover would be useful in a civilian context as well.
