Never used paper tapes...

Remember dl-bl and extent cards ? You had to calculate the exact cylinder, down to the number of bytes, from which your data file on the disk started, and then the number of bytes of data in your file to place an EOF extent card....and if you miscaculated one bit wrong, the horrors, you would have changed the following salaries into nulls for some unfortunate employees !!! Arghhh there are better methods of torturing !!!

Batch programs ! HA ! I coded on arithmetic paper type coding sheets, which were batched up for puching by the punching dept. I then had to batch submit them for compilation. Unless it was important, it took about a week for the first compilation, only to check the spelling/punching mistakes....the program usually took a month to finish. One of my co-workers got married to an operator at office...and we always suspected she did that just so she could get ahead in the batch !!!

And God help you if the rubberband o the cards snapped in the batch pile....the payroll cards quickly got married to the inventry control cards and we had to batch for a separator...recount was just about as tough as the florida one...and took about just as much time !

Ah the trials and triabulation....! It was 1984-1985 for me !
