The process invented by Dr. Cao enables the splitting of an optical signal into an extraordinarily high number of wavelengths, each capable of carrying a stream of data. Avanex has achieved 1,000 wavelengths in laboratory experiments, versus the current commercial maximum of 160.

It would seem that the new MEM switches talked about in Barrons this weekend, can handle 1000 wavelengths.

Avanex Receives Patent for DWDM Technology
FREMONT, Calif., Nov. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Avanex Corporation (Nasdaq: AVNX - news), the global provider of photonic processors that enable next generation performance for optical communications networks, today announced that it has been issued a U.S. patent for its proprietary dense wavelength multiplexing (DWDM) process. Dr. Simon Cao, Chief Technology Officer for the company, is the inventor on the patent.

Patent # 6,130,971 ``Fiber Optic Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexer with a Phase Differential Method of Wavelength Separation Utilizing a Polarization Beam Splitter and a Nonlinear Interferometer'' was issued to Avanex by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on Oct. 10.

``This is a highly significant patent for Avanex,'' company Chairman and CEO Walter Alessandrini said. ``The process invented by Dr. Simon Cao is a key enabling technology in Avanex's revolutionary photonic processing solutions. Award of the patent illustrates the unique nature of Avanex's approach, protects valuable intellectual property and establishes a formidable competitive barrier.'' Dr. Cao now holds five U.S. patents, with 33 more pending.

The process invented by Dr. Cao enables the splitting of an optical signal into an extraordinarily high number of wavelengths, each capable of carrying a stream of data. Avanex has achieved 1,000 wavelengths in laboratory experiments, versus the current commercial maximum of 160.

The patented DWDM process also can be easily modified to allow channels to be dropped or added, which addresses a major obstacle to a fully all-optical communications network. The patent application notes that the material required to manufacture and implement the process is readily available, making it cost-effective.

Avanex's PowerMux(TM) Wavelength Channel Processor, which is based on the patented DWDM process, is shipping commercially.
