Music expresses a range of emotion, including but not limited to sentiments of rebellion and self- assertion. Even Dylan had songs like "Lay Lady Lay" and "If Not for You", "Day of the Locust" and "Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowland", it was not all protest songs and such.

Nowadays, well, it is, again, a mixed bag. "Brian Wilson", by Bare Naked Ladies, is not exactly about being true to yourself, it is more about anxiety. There is a lot of irony out there, like Smash Mouth's "Walking on the Sun", or Harvey Danger's "Flag Pole Sitta". In fact, the irony may be a stronger link to Dylan than the social criticism.......
