Qualcomm, Texas Instruments Reach Patent Agreement

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Wireless technology company Qualcomm Inc. (NasdaqNM:QCOM - news) and semiconductor maker Texas Instruments Inc. (NYSE:TXN - news) on Monday said they agreed to cross license each other's patent portfolios, to allow each company to supply integrated circuits for all wireless standards.

The deal allows global sharing of Texas Instruments's patents for DSP and analog technology, which together convert real-world sounds such as voice and music into digital data, and Qualcomm's patents for its CDMA (news - web sites) mobile technology, and other patents filed before the end of 2005.

DSP chips account for about 85 percent of Texas Instruments's revenues, and are used in items from vacuum cleaners to telephones.

Qualcomm's CDMA technology, which stands for code division multiple access, is a key system for delivering mobile phone calls, and one of three rival global standards.

Shares of Qualcomm were up $4-7/8 to $87-7/8, after it provided encouraging news related to its technology's adoption in China, to its highest levels since May. Meanwhile Texas Instruments was up 7/16 to $38-1/4, still near its 12-month lows of $35-1/2 a year ago.
